Lo Que no Se Hereda (What is Not Inherited) is a photographic body of work that examines how Mexican culture and identity shift across generations within immigrant families in the United States. Focusing on domestic spaces and intimate moments, the images trace the uneven transmission of traditions and memory, revealing how younger generations navigate identity while assimilating into a new cultural landscape. While immigration is often depicted through movement and adaptation, this work turns inward, considering what unfolds over time within the home and where the effects of assimilation are deeply felt, yet frequently unseen. This project is rooted in a desire for individuals to have the choice to remain connected to their cultural heritage and understand their origins. Inspired by my family, friends, and community, many of whom have sacrificed profoundly by leaving their home countries in pursuit of a better life, the work reflects both resilience and complexity. Rather than critiquing these experiences, the photographs seek to bring awareness to the nuanced, often unspoken struggles that accompany them.
