Deckwreck is a fantasy trading card project that combines illustration, graphic design, and game mechanics to create an interactive visual experience. While trading card games have had a lasting cultural impact, balancing aesthetic appeal with functional clarity remains a key design challenge. This project addresses that tension through nine original trading cards and corresponding posters that prioritize both usability and artistic expression.
The process included concept development, sketching, and digital rendering in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, supported by research into historical card design, trading card conventions, and art movements such as Fauvism and Post-Impressionism. Major franchises like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! informed the organization of visual and informational elements.
The final works present a cohesive visual identity defined by bold color, clean brushwork, and contemporary digital finishing. Each card integrates gameplay information within a compelling composition, while the poster formats isolate and emphasize the artwork. Informed by research and critique, the project merges painterly illustration with structured layout design to enhance both readability and engagement. Ultimately, Deckwreck demonstrates how historical art influences and contemporary digital practices can be unified into a cohesive creative system.
