Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Overview

The 7M视频 Doctor of Education in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education prepares you for leadership roles in schools for the deaf and teacher-trainer positions in university settings. Other career opportunities include educational interpreter, policy maker for deaf education, curriculum developer, researcher or higher education faculty, among others. This program accepts both hearing and deaf applicants.

This program offers a full-time track that takes two years, including summers and a dissertation, or a part-time track during summers only (depending on course offerings).

We welcome deaf and hard of hearing graduate students, and many of our faculty are deaf. Our program has placed its graduates in colleges and universities in New Mexico, California, Maryland, Illinois, Texas and Saudi Arabia, to name a few places.

Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Courses You May Take

Psycholinguistics: Sign languages have all of the fundamental properties of spoken languages (e.g., phonology, morphology, grammar, and syntax). Sign languages combine meaningless sublexical units into larger meaningless phonetic features, phonemes and syllables into meaningful principles that determine how units of the language can combine. Sign languages, just like spoken languages, have grammatical principles that determine how units of the language can combine. Therefore, in the course basic linguistic principles will be learned and then discussed as to how they apply to sign languages.

Cognition and Cognitive Development: This course reviews traditional cognitive and developmental theories and discusses how Deaf-centric research shows differences between Deaf cognition and traditional theories.

Proposal Writing: This course is the final course prior to beginning the dissertation. It documents that you are able to complete independent research for the completion of the dissertation. The course focuses on Chapters 1,2, and 3 of the dissertation proposal. Both the course instructor and the student’s dissertation chair will be involved in providing feedback weekly to the student.

Ethics: This course will investigate basic theories of morality and how they apply to ethical research practices. Ethics is the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles. Students will be able to discuss academic culture, the concept of morality, and how they relate to ethics.

Scholarly Writing: This course will support students as they learn how to develop arguments, organize literature reviews, and write a doctoral level paper.
